We have all been there. In a room full of people, whether it's a company event or you're in your university common space. You're bored and kind of lonely and you want to talk to someone new and socialise. But your nervousness kicks in, you become super introverted and in the end nothing happens.

The design for Bantah was inspired by modern dating apps like Tinder and Bumble but the whole concept was a different twist on the open source chat website Omegle. The use case is designed for users within close proximity (the same room or venue) instead of connecting people based on interests or the whole world. Anonymity is a key factor that encourages to dive in without hesitation.

The random user matching process was decided to be maintained on Firebase as our backend. Since this was a hackathon project we decided to use this opportunity to try out something new.

This app was was designed to engage users who want to connect with people but just can't make the first step. University students, working professionals during corporate events, all of us look for a moment but get cold feet. Bantah helps you there.

For the UI we went for a something that looked more like a game than a chat app. That would draw more users in with the vibrant colours and popping interactive elements. It also meant that there was less intimidation for a introverted user to hop on the app and start using it.

We also kept avatars that would be fun and kind of match the users personality closely. Make the users feel more involved in the process with them being able to select their own avatars and their own anonymous username.

Keeping a time limit to enter the first line encourages users to be at their most spontaneous and wittiest. Make a joke, ask a question, connect, have fun, and if you like each other find out who you are and meet them. They're in the same room as you, so if you're afraid cause you might mess up the punchline to a joke, don't worry. You can fix your first impression here and then make it better with the person you connect with.
